What is Natasha's Law you may ask?

It means that every food retailer and the operator must put full disclosure of every ingredient onto pre-packed for direct sale labels. This includes: The full name of the food, All ingredients in order by weight and highlights all allergens that may be contained in the food. The Food Standards Agency will publish further information on the 1st of October.

Who is Natasha?

Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, 15, Tragically passed away in 2016 from an allergic reaction due to a lack of allergen labels on pre-packaged food. The government decided to amend the Food information regulations 2019 in light of the incident.

What is PPDS (Pre Packed for direct sale)?

PPDS is food packaged, prepared and stored at the same place ready to be sold. It can be fully or partially sealed but the food hasn't been altered since the initial packaging. So each ingredient that goes in, needs to display any of the 14 named allergens

The 14 named allergens are:

• Celery
• Cereals containing gluten (such as barley and oats).
• Crustaceans (such as prawns, crabs, and lobsters).
• Eggs.
• Fish.
• Lupin.
• Milk.
• Molluscs (such as mussels and oysters).
• Mustard.
• Peanuts.
• Sesame.
• Soybeans.
• Sulphur dioxide and sulphites (if they are at a concentration of more than ten parts per million).
• Tree nuts (Almonds, Hazelnuts, Walnuts, Brazil nuts, Cashews, Pecans, Pistachios and Macadamia nuts).

What are we doing about it?

To make it easier for our epos users we've updated our labelling system to allow for allergens to be easily shown on labels. We have also included an allergen section on the stock manager which allows vendors to access the information they need.
